Why should our school test for radon?

Radon can get into any building and because students and staff spend long hours in school buildings, increasing their risk of exposure, it’s important to test in schools to make sure radon levels are low.

  • If levels are high, often just adjusting the HVAC system can adequately lower levels.

  • A test kit should be placed in each classroom and in any other frequently occupied rooms — offices, the cafeteria, and the teachers’ lounge.

  • Test when classes are in session to get results that reflect typical exposures.

  • If any test results show levels over 4 pCi/L, have your HVAC system checked to make sure it is operating as expected. Test again after any adjustments are made.

  • If levels are still above 4 pCi/L, hire a professional to test and recommend ways to lower your radon levels.

  • The California Department of Public Health’s Indoor Radon Program may have free test kits available to California schools. Contact Dale Parks for information on test kits for schools.
